vista beta 2 64 bit issues

Vista beta-2 64-bit issues

I haven't tried 64-bit XP but 64-bit Vista Beta2 seems to be a kind of nightmare in terms of legacy applications and drivers compatibility. Maybe that is something that is going to be polished before release, but so far it looks really depressing. Photoshop doesn't install - only under "Administrator" account and you have to take ownership and change permissions on \Windows. But never mind, it won't work under any other account anyway so change your name..
Musicmatch doesn't work at all. I could install it but it never started.
I was sooo happy to setup Microsoft native Intellitype and Intellipoint - however I had to de-install Intellipoint because the wheel doesn't work then. Amazingly, everything works after de-installation and even Device Manager shows MS Mouse Explorer and not just a HID-compliant Mouse device.
iTune
and QuickTime have caused major inconvenience with blinking - swtching between non-glass/glass modes. What's the problem with Quick Time and FX??? I've never had any issues with NVidia transparency and QuickTime and iTunes.
3 devices are still not recognized properly. My old VideoBlaster web cam for example: Creative said they won't do the 64-bit driver. Why isn't it possible to support 32-bit driver mode for legacy hardware? Ok, it's probably not such an issue for me: I can go buy another webcam and also TV-card (not supported too) but I'm sure there would be plenty of those devices and the users would be extremely happy to have it all compatible with their OS.
Allright, now I'm going to switch to 32-bit. Let's see what's the difference...

Build 5308 in NOT Beta 2, it is an Interim Build, and is NOT to be considered Official Beta Quality. Beta 2 is currently NOT due out until Wednesday, April 12th, 2006.

Like beta2 is going to improve 64bit driver support... This is not just visa 64bit problem, driver support sucks badly in XP64bit...

Driver support ultimately depends on the Industry, not until the device driver developers see the incentives in Windows Vista will you see your devices supported in Vista. Its possible that it could be RTM or SP1 for Vista.
I say, if you do plan on in investing 64-bit Windows, at least do the research before jump head in, it will save you a lot of time, money and trouble, even if its Vista. -- Andre Windows Connect | http://www.windowsconnected.com Extended64 | http://www.extended64.com Blog | http://www.extended64.com/blogs/andre http://spaces.msn.com/members/adacosta "Mark Gillespie" wrote in message

Windows Vista (TM) Beta 2 Evaluation copy. Build 5308

As stated previously, driver issues are a concern on x64 in regards to certain devices. I know I use it here everyday and dont have issues, but I also am not using anything that I would in my day to day life here at work (camera, scanner, etc) that are particular pain points for the end users using x64 now.
It does fall to the manufacturer, as Andre stated, to deliver these drivers to you, the consumer. That being said, from what I have played with on Vista to this point, driver support seems to be somewhat better.

We must be very close to Beta 2.
The sign is there because there a lot of places where "Beta 2" must appear, when Beta 2 is finally released, instead of "Beta 1" and it would be a major task to change them all only in time for the final B2 build.
So the screens are updated earlier, although the release is not yet quite B2.

I think the person who is responsible for the build tags had jumped the gun and accidentally put BETA 2 there, so there was some issues changing it. I also read it had something to do with the build being forked and on the BETA 2 development branch, thats why it inherited the BETA 2 build tag.
Currently, Windows Vista neither BETA 1 or 2, like Kevin Panzke keeps mentioning, its an Interim release on the development path to BETA 2. -- Andre Windows Connect | http://www.windowsconnected.com Extended64 | http://www.extended64.com Blog | http://www.extended64.com/blogs/andre http://spaces.msn.com/members/adacosta "y3k" wrote in message

I use x64 on a daily basis (it's my only OS, as I traded in my 32bit licence for 64bit last year). But I checked out before I leapt, using the trial. It's only my Epson scanner that does not work, and for thay I boot VMWare free server, and use a old Win98 licence I have spare.
Kludge, but it works.
